The Note I posted on 02/06/2006 To the Administrative Division Policy Agent should have indicated "Recent regulatory updates includes - added section on rebreathers."
We are in the final stages of accreditation of our scientific diving program, and we have updated the section on the use of rebreathers to conform with the requirements of the American Association of Underwater Scientists(AAUS). This policy has been in place previously, and it was approved by the administration. Below, I have copied a previous E-mail correspondence with Johnny that should clarify why we need this policy, and why we must keep it in line with the AAUS.

Ed, since these are internal regulations, you can just publish the document. Thanks for the good work.............Johnny

Johnny,
Somewhere around 1999, Dr. Walton and others set up an ad hoc committee to establish University regulations in compliance with the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (AAUS). The AAUS regulates diver certification and specifically scientific diving (funded and unfunded).
In order to continue to receive funding from some federal agencies, it has become necessary for the University to publish regulations that protect our divers
and set up procedures for certification, testing and planning.
I have been working with Marc Slattery and other former members of that committee, and we have come up with a "University of Mississippi Scientific Diving Manual". Most of the material in the manual comes from other AAUS approved research programs
.
The draft document is located at :
http://www.olemiss.edu/depts/environmental_safety/diving/
Here is the issue - The diving safety committee is not listed as a current standing committee, and we have not been able to determine if it is a sub-committee. At least two of the former members no longer hold positions at the University.
We are confident that we have formulated appropriate policies in line with the
recommendations of the AAUS, and I would certainly recommend that the document
be adopted by the University.
However, since we have no current University diving regulations, I do not know
if this is a Health and Safety issue (where we just publish the document and it becomes internal policy), or if this document is something that would need to
be approved by the Chancellor's office.
Could you please advise us.
Thanks,
Ed
